2.43 Lakh Voters Dropped As Assam Updates Electoral Roll Ahead Of Polls

Assam’s voter list has been updated following a Special Revision that led to the removal of 2.43 lakh names, election officials confirmed. The exercise was conducted entirely through field verification at households, setting Assam apart from other states where voter revisions relied on applications and documents.

After the revision, the state’s draft electoral roll now includes 2.52 crore electors, marking a 1.35 percent increase over the roll published earlier this year. Officials said the process identified large numbers of entries linked to deceased voters, migration, and duplication, which will be formally corrected during the claims and objections phase.

The revision drive, carried out over nearly a year, involved nearly 30,000 booth-level staff. In the same period, authorities also registered over seven lakh new voters, while removing more than four lakh names from the list.

With Assembly elections expected in March-April, the Election Commission has begun reviewing district preparedness and security planning. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has meanwhile indicated that a more detailed voter revision will be taken up after the elections.
