Bengal in Shock as BJP Leader Suvendu Adhikari Accuses TMC of Brutal Attack and Shocking Police Failure

Alleged Attack on Chandrakona Road Sparks Political Uproar
West Bengal plunged into fresh political controversy on Saturday night after BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari accused Trinamool Congress workers of launching a brutal attack on his convoy. The incident reportedly took place around 8:20 PM on Chandrakona Road in Paschim Medinipur district.
Adhikari was returning from Purulia when a group of alleged TMC supporters blocked his route. He said the attackers suddenly surrounded his vehicles and turned violent.
Claims of Violence in Presence of Police
Adhikari claimed that the attackers used bamboo sticks and party flags to target his convoy. He alleged that the violence occurred in the presence of police personnel. According to him, officers at the spot failed to act.
He described the incident as a shocking breakdown of law enforcement. Adhikari accused the state administration of encouraging political violence through inaction.
โAttack on Democracy,โ Says Adhikari
Reacting strongly, Adhikari said the assault was not personal. He called it a direct attack on democratic dissent in West Bengal. He accused the Mamata Banerjeeโled government of creating a climate of fear for opposition voices.
โThe ruling party resorts to force when it cannot face public anger,โ he said in a statement.
Dharna Inside Police Station Demanding Arrests
Following the incident, Adhikari reached the Chandrakona Police Station and began a sit-in protest. He demanded the immediate registration of an FIR and the arrest of those involved.
He refused to leave the station until authorities assured concrete action. Supporters gathered outside as political tension escalated late into the night.
BJP Seeks Central Intervention
Senior BJP leaders condemned the alleged attack. The party questioned public safety in the state if an opposition leader could face violence in public.
Reports said the Ministry of Home Affairs sought a detailed account of the incident. BJP leaders also plan to submit video evidence to central authorities.
TMC Denies Allegations, Probe Awaited
The Trinamool Congress rejected the accusations. Party leaders termed the claims politically motivated. Police officials said they were reviewing the situation, though they announced no arrests at the time of reporting.
The episode once again highlights concerns over political violence in West Bengal. It also raises serious questions about police accountability as elections draw closer.
