Mamata Banerjee’s Temple Visit Sparks Outrage and Backlash

Cooch Behar, West Bengal: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the Madan Mohan Temple in Cooch Behar. She went there on Monday, December 8, 2025. This move sparked a political row with the opposition party of West Bengal, Bharatiya Janata Party or BJP.
Mamata Banerjee (Chief Minister of West Bengal) visited this temple. She was accompanied by North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha. Cooch Behar Municipality Chairman Rabindranath Ghosh was also involved during this visit. NBSTC Chairman Partha Pratim Roy joined them. Trinamool Congress (TMC) district president Avijit De Bhowmick was part of the visit too. Mamata Banerjee visited the Madan Mohan Temple for religious expression. It was a strategic political move particularly aimed at the Rajbanshi community. During her two-day administrative and political tour of Cooch Behar, she took time to offer prayers. This was on December 8, 2025, when she also performed arati. Her party, the TMC, framed this as a customary act of faith. It was a demonstration of respect for local religious sentiments.
However, the visit carried significant political weight also. The historic temple is a major cultural and spiritual hub for the influential Rajbanshi Community. This community is crucial for electoral success in North Bengal. In this region, BJP has gained substantial ground. By engaging visibly with a revered local institution, Mamata Banerjee aims to connect personally with this community. She intends to counter BJPโs โHindutvaโ narrative. This visit, therefore, served a dual purpose. It fulfilled a personal religious observance. It also sent a potent political signal of solidarity to a key voter base ahead of future elections.
BJP accused Mamata Banerjee of performing the arati ritual incorrectly. They claimed she disrespected Hindu traditions by not performing the rituals according to custom. The specific points of criticism, shared by the BJP on social media are as follows:
Improper Bell Ringing: The BJP alleged that she did not even know how to ring the temple bell (ghanta) properly.
Skipping Gita Recital: They also criticized her for reportedly bypassing a recital of the Bhagavad Gita during the visit.
BJP observed these actions. They claimed that Mamata Banerjee โneither follows Hindu traditions nor understands them.โ They also stated she had โno right to insult Hindus with such bizarre gesturesโ at the temple. This criticism was a part of an ongoing political dispute. The BJP attempts to challenge Mamata Banerjeeโs Hindu credentials. They also question her party (TMC)โs outreach to the community in West Bengal. Therefore, this incident has intensified the ongoing war of words in West Bengal. Both the TMC and the BJP are using the event to leverage their political narratives. The temple visit video and the political reactions have gained significant traction on the social media.
