AI/Deepfake Horror: Cyber Ring busted After Student’s Death

New Delhi/Kolkata: Police on Saturday uncovered a major criminal group across several regions, making it a pan-India operation. The gang used easy-to-find AI/Deepfake apps to create fake, obscene nude pictures of people and blackmail them.

This massive move took place after a college student killed himself under threats and compulsion. The police ramped up their search after Rahul Bharti (19), a college student, died in Faridabad. According to the source, hackers got into his phone and made explicit videos. They demanded ₹20,000 and threatened to share the videos everywhere.

So far, the police have arrested people from several states, including West Bengal. The gang mostly targeted young people. They stole personal pictures, made explicit content, making them believe that it was real and demanded money.

This incident caused anger and ethical concern among the public. It also raises questions about the authenticity of content shared online. “In their last message, they actually told him to end his life.”, said a relative who was very upset with the incident. He further added, “They never stopped bothering him.”

In further investigation, the police seized multiple phones, computers, compromised images and bank details linked to the gang. The police also stated that the gang hid the extorted money in several bank accounts and cryptocurrency.

Cybersecurity experts have emphasized the urgent need for enhanced digital literacy and robust legal amendments. “You cannot trust your eyes anymore,’ said Dr. Anirban, a Kolkata-based cyber analyst. He added, “AI content is fast and realistic. Most times, victims feel they have nowhere to go.”

Looking at the severity of the ongoing cyber crimes, authorities have urged the public to be careful. Especially, parents and young users are asked to exercise extreme caution while sharing personal images. A police spokesperson stated that if anyone receives AI/Deepfake threats, they must report them immediately. They can use the National Cybercrime Reporting portal to file their complaint. They have assured to protect the victims under the relevant sections of IT Act.
