Bengal BLO Breakdown video sparks outcry over SIR Pressure

Kolkata: A distressing video of a Booth Level Officer from Hoogly breaking down under the mounting pressure of the special intensive Revision (SIR) exercise has intensified the debate over the overwhelming workload faced by front-line election staff across West Bengal.

The BLO, Ms Sumita Mukhpadhyay, a school teacher by profession alleged that she was forced to wait for hours at the block panchayat office despite being unwell, as officials demanded her complete voter data entry work online.

Repeated server crashes, lack of assistance and being denied the meal pushed her to a breaking point, she said.

She further added “ I said there from 11:30 am to 4:30 pm . The server kept failing and no one helped . I felt extremely sick….. I even felt like ending my life “, recalling how a colleague had to escort her home due to her fragile condition.

Her Husband Biswajit Ghosh said she returned home “ mentally shattered “, crying uncontrollably and on the verge of needing medical attention.

“ The server failure was not her fault, yet she is being blamed. Many BlOs are falling ill and some even died due to this pressure “, he alleged.

Susmita said she had already updated nearly 300 voter entries from home before being summoned again. She accused the Election Commission of poor planning and abrupt changes in instructions, claiming BLOs were being overburdened without consideration for their health or safety.

This incident draws sharp criticism from the Teachers and Education workers BLo Duty Resistance Forum.

However, sources in the SDO office from Pandya Block Division shared a contrasting version describing the BLO as low-performing and claiming she was called to the office for guidance. “ She was given support. If she requires medical help, we will look into it, an official said.

The video now widely circulated has reignited concerns over the mental and physical toll on BLOs during the revision date.

In the second phase of the SIR process continues across 12 states, this incident has laid bare the strain faced by thousands of frontline staff highlighting an urgent need for reforms before the pressure becomes unbearable for many more.
