No H-1B Visa or OPT? 78% Indians Rethink US Study Plans
New Delhi, India: Out of nearly 1,200 respondents, only 22% said they would still pursue US education, while the majority expressed concerns over the lack of work opportunities post-graduation. The data reflects growing skepticism among students about the value of expensive US degrees without the ability to gain work experience through OPT or secure long-term employment via an H-1B visa.
Global Shift in Preferences
Education consultants note a growing shift toward countries like Canada, Germany, and the UK, which offer more secure post-study work options.
โThe value of a US degree is tied not only to academics but also to work opportunities,โ said Ritesh Jain, co-founder of LaunchEd. โIf that path closes, students will seek destinations where their investment feels safer.โ
Policy Changes Driving Uncertainty
The US government is considering sweeping changes, including replacing the duration of status policy with fixed visa terms, increasing payroll taxes for OPT workers, and tightening H-1B eligibility. These moves have intensified concerns among international students, especially Indians, who form the largest applicant pool for these programs.
Expert Advice for Students
Experts recommend long-term planning and focusing on global skillsets rather than relying on a single country or visa route. โStudents should diversify their options, seek globally relevant programs, and build careers that arenโt dependent solely on US pathways,โ Jain advised.
