Large Turnout for Anti-Immigration March

Thousands of people gathered in Sydney for the nationwide “March for Australia.” Organizers demanded strict limits on immigration, arguing that high migration adds to housing shortages, rising rents, and pressure on public services. Estimates of attendance ranged from 5,000 to 15,000. Demonstrators carried banners and chanted slogans, claiming that immigration undermines Australian culture and wages.

Government Condemns the Protests

The Labor government strongly criticized the rallies. Agriculture Minister Murray Watt said the marches promoted division and risked giving extremist groups more visibility. Authorities also noted the presence of neo-Nazi activists, including members of the National Socialist Network. In Sydney, some marchers booed the group, but their appearance still raised concerns about far-right influence. Officials insisted that immigration remains essential for workforce needs and economic growth.

Counter-Rallies Push for Inclusion

Refugee and migrant support groups staged counter-demonstrations nearby. The Refugee Action Coalition led hundreds of participants in Sydney, who carried signs calling for solidarity and equality. They argued immigration enriches Australia’s culture and economy. Similar counter-rallies took place in Melbourne, Canberra, and Broome. In some locations, counter-marchers outnumbered anti-immigration protesters, signaling strong public resistance to exclusionary politics.

Strong Security and Police Presence

Authorities deployed more than 800 officers in Sydney to keep the rallies under control. Police erected barriers, redirected traffic, and separated rival groups to prevent clashes. One woman was arrested at Hyde Park for disorderly conduct, while minor scuffles broke out in Melbourne before officers intervened. Despite tensions, most gatherings ended without major violence.

Immigration Debate Deepens

The day’s events highlighted Australia’s divisions over migration policy. Protesters demanded tougher restrictions, citing social and economic pressures. Counter-groups stressed the benefits of immigration, from diversity to filling labor shortages. With both sides standing firm, the immigration debate remains a central fault line in Australian politics and shows no signs of fading.
