Zelensky Confirms the Murder

Former parliamentary speaker Andriy Parubiy was shot dead in Lviv on Saturday, August 30, 2025. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the killing and called it a โ€œhorrendous murder.โ€ In a statement on X, he said Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko had reported the first details of the case. Zelenskyy also expressed condolences to Parubiyโ€™s family and assured that authorities are using all available resources to find the killer.

Details of the Shooting

According to the Kyiv Independent, the shooting took place in the southern Frankivskyi district of Lviv. Police received an emergency call around noon, but Parubiy died at the scene from gunshot wounds. Security forces immediately sealed off the area and began evidence collection. Later, lawmaker Iryna Herashchenko confirmed to the Kyiv Independent that the victim was indeed Parubiy.

The National Police initially stated that a political figure had been killed before confirming Parubiyโ€™s identity. Investigators opened a full-scale probe, questioning witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage. Zelenskyy said law enforcement and intelligence agencies are conducting an active manhunt and promised that justice will be delivered quickly.

Parubiyโ€™s Political Role

Parubiy, born in 1971, served as speaker of the Verkhovna Rada between 2016 and 2019. He was also a leading figure during the EuroMaidan protests, where he organized self-defense units and gained national recognition. Throughout his career, he remained a prominent figure in Ukraineโ€™s politics and a strong advocate for independence from Russian influence.
