Portugal set to hand Diogo Jota’s number 21 kit to his close friend Ruben Neves

Portugal will honour the late Diogo Jota by passing his iconic No. 21 jersey to close friend and former teammate Ruben Neves, national coach Roberto Martinez announced on Friday.

The gesture comes weeks after Jota and his younger brother Andre Silva lost their lives in a car crash in northwestern Spain on July 3. The 28-year-old Liverpool forwardโ€™s sudden death sent shockwaves through the football world, prompting widespread tributes from clubs, players, and fans.

Neves, now playing for Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, shared a long footballing journey with Jota through Portugalโ€™s youth teams, FC Porto, and Wolverhampton Wanderers. He also served as a pallbearer at Jotaโ€™s funeral, underscoring their close bond.

Explaining the symbolic move, Martinez said: โ€œDiogoโ€™s absence unites us even more. He wanted to win the World Cup, and we want to honour his dream. The No. 21 shirt will now be worn by Ruben Neves, someone who had a special connection with him. Every time we step onto the field, we carry Diogoโ€™s energy.โ€

Jota last featured for Portugal in their Nations League final victory over Spain in June. Since his passing, Liverpool have permanently retired his No. 20 shirt, while tributes continue to pour in across the football community.

Portugal begin their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign against Armenia on September 6, followed by Hungary on September 9. The squad includes Cristiano Ronaldo, Joรฃo Fรฉlix โ€” and now Neves, carrying more than just a number.
