Student’s Suicide at Sharda University Sparks Legal Action, Campus Unrest

A second-year BDS student, Jyoti Sharma, allegedly died by suicide on July 18, 2025, inside her Sharda University hostel in Greater Noida. She left behind a suicide note accusing two faculty members of mental harassment, igniting campus-wide protests and legal investigation.

Jyoti’s note specifically named faculty members from the dental department, alleging long-term emotional distress due to persistent humiliation. According to her family, these issues were previously raised with university officials, but no corrective action was taken. Jyoti’s father revealed that days before her death, he met with faculty and received verbal assurance that the harassment would end. He claims university officials failed to act, allowing the mistreatment to continue. Her batchmates corroborated the toxic environment, describing verbal abuse and inappropriate remarks from faculty members. Some feared academic penalties so deeply that they avoided going home to prevent missing classes.An FIR was registered based on her family’s complaint. Individuals from university staff members were booked. Two faculty members named in the note were arrested, and the university has suspended the accused while initiating an internal probe.A video showing Jyoti’s mother slapping the Head of Department has circulated widely, amplifying public anger and media attention.
