Rohith Vemula Case Gains New Momentum After Closure Report

Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka announced on July 12 that Telangana would reopen the Rohith Vemula case. His statement came during a press conference in New Delhi, alongside senior Congress leaders.

The state submitted a formal note to the High Court, requesting permission to restart the investigation. This move directly challenges the previous closure report filed by Hyderabad police in May 2024.

That report had cleared several key individuals and controversially stated Rohith was not Dalit, but OBC. Vikramarka rejected those conclusions outright. He insisted that the original investigation failed due to political interference.

Rohith Vemula Case Prompts Legal and Political Reform

While addressing the media, Vikramarka strongly condemned the BJPโ€™s role in the case. He accused the party of promoting individuals involved in institutional oppression. For example, Ramchander Rao, named in the case, now serves as BJP Telangana president.

Another individual, N Susheel Kumar, previously part of ABVP, currently holds a central university faculty post. Vikramarka said these appointments reflect how the system protects the powerful.

In addition, he announced plans for a Rohith Vemula Act. This proposed legislation would protect Dalit, Adivasi, and marginalized students from institutional discrimination. The state law department is currently vetting the draft.

Demands for Accountability Continue to Grow

Congress leaders have renewed calls for justice. Many say the original case lacked depth and failed to address caste-based exclusion. Party MP Rahul Gandhi previously demanded legislation to stop such discrimination.

The reopening signals that Telanganaโ€™s Congress government intends to prioritize student rights and institutional accountability. Students’ unions across the country have welcomed this decision and plan to hold public forums in support.

Vikramarka emphasized that Rohithโ€™s death should not be forgotten or buried under bureaucratic loopholes. Instead, it should inspire legislative change and educational reform.

A Step Toward Long-Delayed Justice

The Rohith Vemula case stands as a tragic reminder of caste prejudice in academic institutions. By reopening the case, Telangana aims to send a strong messageโ€”no one is above the law, and no injustice will be ignored.

The coming weeks will determine whether the new investigation leads to actual accountability or becomes yet another political episode. However, the decision alone has rekindled hope among student activists, educators, and civil rights defenders
