Cash, Silence and Grief: Hidden Victims of Kumbh Stampede
In a troubling revelation that casts serious doubts over official narratives, a recent BBC investigative report has alleged that the real death toll in the stampede at the 2025 MahaKumbh in Prayagraj may be far higher than what the Uttar Pradesh government has publicly acknowledged. The stateโs official count stands atย 37 deaths, while **BBCโs months-long investigation pegs the number at a staggeringย 82.
The tragedy occurred on January 29, Mauni Amavasya, one of the holiest bathing days, when at least four stampedes broke out in different parts of the sprawling 4,000-hectare Kumbh zone. Eyewitnesses and survivors recount scenes of utter chaos, where men, women, and the elderly were trampled under the sheer pressure of uncontrolled crowds.
Despite UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath proclaiming in the Assembly that the Kumbhโs โsuccess will echo across the worldโ, the BBCโs findings suggest a more somber reality โ where dozens of lives were lost, some officially recognized, many quietly ignored.
CASH PAYOUTS, BUT NO NAMES
The UP government stated that โน25 lakh compensation was given to each of the 35 identified victimsโ families through direct bank transfers. But the BBC found that 26 other families received โน5 lakh each in cash โ off the books, with no official acknowledgement, and often under pressure to sign pre-written statements falsely citing โsudden illnessโ as the cause of death.
In some instances, these cash transactions were captured on camera โ bundles of โน500 notes handed over by police officers, reportedly in the presence of local officials. The legality of these payouts remains questionable, with no documentation indicating they came from sanctioned treasury funds.
Moreover, many families were coerced into signing papers that concealed the real cause of death, the investigation reveals.
THE UNACKNOWLEDGED DEAD
The BBC spoke to over 100 families across 50 districts, many of whom had clear photographic, medical, or forensic evidence that their loved ones died in the January 29 stampede. But their names are missing from all official lists.
In one haunting photograph, a man named Nankan lies lifeless amidst dozens of bodies. His nephew is seen clutching his hand. The family eventually received โน25 lakh, but they describe scenes of horror and bureaucratic indifference. โPeopleโs clothes were torn off in the chaos. It was a massacre,โ said his wife, Rama Devi.
FOUR STAMPEDES, SILENT CORNERS
The BBC report identifies four distinct sites within the Kumbh zone where stampedes occurred that night. While the government acknowledged 30 deaths at the main site near Sangam Nose, seven more were said to have occurred โen routeโ to hospitals. But the actual number of fatal spots is far higher, with many fatalities likely buried under the rhetoric of โpressure pointsโ.
The official MahaKumbh social media handle acknowledged 37 deaths, stating compensation had been processed for 35. But there is no public list of the deceased. No clarity on who was compensated, who was not, and why.
A MASSIVE GATHERING, A GIANT COVER-UP?
The 2025 Kumbh was billed as the largest religious gathering in human history, with a staggering 66 crore footfallreported by UP officials. The 45-day event saw โน7,000 crore in state expenditure.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath hailed it as a global success. โIts echo will be heard around the world,โ he told the Assembly on February 19.
But many families heard only silence. Some were left without compensation. Others were handed cash and forced into compliance. And some still roam government offices, carrying photos of the dead and post-mortem reports that no one will read.
DEMANDS FOR TRANSPARENCY
Civil society groups and legal experts are now demanding a full disclosure of victimsโ names, compensation records, and source of funds for the off-the-books cash payouts.
โThis is not just a failure of crowd control,โ said one retired Allahabad High Court judge who reviewed the report. โThis is a failure of accountability.โ
While the state has yet to respond formally to the BBC investigation, pressure is mounting. The reportโs findings have sparked renewed calls for a judicial inquiry and greater transparency.
As the echoes of the Kumbh fade, the question lingers: How many lives were truly lost โ and how many were quietly erased?
**This report is based on findings by the BBC, corroborated through interviews, photographic/video evidence, and medical documentation.
