Supreme Court Rejects Vijay Shah’s Apology, Orders SIT Probe into Remarks Against Army Officer

Top Court Demands Accountability Over Derogatory Comments
The Supreme Court of India has refused to accept an apology from Madhya Pradesh minister Kunwar Vijay Shah, stating that his remarks against Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi were not only offensive but also brought shame to the nation.
During a hearing on Monday, the court said Shah’s statement, which appeared to question the officer’s loyalty, could not be excused with a simple apology. The bench, led by Justice Surya Kant, called the comments “deeply disturbing” and said such rhetoric from an elected representative undermines the dignity of the armed forces.
SIT to Investigate Minister’s Remarks
Taking a firm stance, the Court directed the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the matter. The SIT will consist of three senior police officers from the Madhya Pradesh cadre, one of whom must be a woman. The team will be headed by an officer not below the rank of Inspector General.
The Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police has been instructed to constitute the SIT by 10 AM on May 20 and submit a status report by May 28. The Court has stayed Shah’s arrest for the moment but made it clear he must fully cooperate with the investigation.
Remarks That Sparked National Outrage
Shah had allegedly made derogatory comments against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, linking her name to Pakistan and questioning her commitment to the country. The comments quickly drew widespread criticism and led to the registration of an FIR.
The Supreme Court observed that the state government had failed to take appropriate action and hinted that stronger steps should have been taken earlier.
Strong Message on Responsibility
This move by the apex court sends a clear message that individuals in public office will be held to a high standard, especially when their words involve members of the armed forces. The court underscored the need for responsible speech and respect for those who serve the nation.
