Bihar Government Renames Gaya as ‘Gaya Ji’ to Acknowledge Spiritual Significance

A Name Rooted in Faith and Tradition
The Bihar government has officially renamed the historic town of Gaya to ‘Gaya Ji’ in a move that pays homage to its rich religious and cultural heritage. The decision was approved during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on May 16.
According to Additional Chief Secretary S. Siddharth, the new name reflects the sentiments of local communities and acknowledges the town’s longstanding spiritual importance.
Gaya’s Sacred Legacy
Gaya is revered by followers of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. It is closely associated with the Hindu ritual of ‘pind daan’, a ceremony performed for the salvation of ancestors. As per legend, Lord Rama performed the ritual for his father, King Dasharatha, at this site.
Nearby Bodh Gaya, where Gautama Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree, further adds to the town’s global religious significance.
Demand for Renaming Fulfilled
The renaming meets a decades-old request from local citizens, religious groups, and leaders who have long referred to the town as ‘Gaya Ji’ in reverence. In 2022, the Gaya Municipal Corporation had passed a resolution in support of the change.
Gaya MLA and Cooperative Department Minister Prem Kumar expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for responding to the cultural sentiments of the people.
Political Leaders Welcome the Move
The decision has received appreciation across political lines. Janata Dal (United) National Working President Sanjay Kumar Jha stated that the renaming upholds the town’s spiritual legacy. BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad also welcomed the move, calling it a respectful nod to Bihar’s cultural identity.
A Push for Further Restorations
Following the change, there is a growing demand to restore the capital city’s ancient name, with many calling for Patna to be renamed ‘Pataliputra’, its historic identity dating back to the Mauryan Empire.
