Power Outage Triggers Deadly Stampede at Goa Temple
A scene of tragedy on Friday at a religious festival at the Shantadurga Temple in Goa. A stampede claimed the lives of at least six devotees and injured several others. The incident has raised serious questions about crowd management and safety at public religious gatherings.
Panic Triggered by Power Outage
The stampede occurred in the early hours during the annual festival celebrations at the Shantadurga Temple in Ponda, about 30 kilometers from Panaji. According to eyewitnesses and preliminary police reports, the chaos began after a sudden power outage plunged parts of the temple complex into darkness. This caused confusion and panic among the large crowd, especially near the sanctum area, where thousands had gathered to offer prayers.
โThere was a loud noise, followed by people shouting and running in all directions. Many fell to the ground, and some were trampled before anyone could respond,โ said Ramesh Naik, a devotee who witnessed the incident.
Victims and Emergency Response
At least six people, including two elderly women and a child, died on the spot due to suffocation and injuries. Over 20 others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals by local authorities and temple volunteers. Several are said to be in critical condition.
Emergency teams from the fire department, police, and state health services responded swiftly, but by then, the damage had already been done.

Government Action and Compensation
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant expressed deep grief over the loss of lives and announced โน5 lakh as compensation for the families of the deceased. He also assured free treatment for all injured persons.
โThis is a heartbreaking incident. A full investigation has been ordered, and those responsible for any negligence will be held accountable,โ the Chief Minister said during a press briefing.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have begun a detailed probe into the incident. Initial observations point toward poor crowd management and inadequate infrastructure at the temple, despite the large footfall expected during such major events. The temple committee is also under scrutiny for failing to implement safety measures.
Officials from the disaster management department, police, and district administration are working together to review the templeโs preparedness and identify lapses.
Temple Shuts Down Festivities
The Shantadurga Temple, a revered religious site in Goa, has suspended all festival-related activities in the aftermath of the tragedy. The temple trust has extended condolences to the families of the victims and pledged full cooperation with the investigation.
Call for Stricter Safety Measures
The incident has sparked widespread concern across the state. Social activists and safety experts are urging the government to introduce stricter safety protocols for large religious gatherings. Proposals include regulated entry, digital monitoring, proper signage, trained volunteers, and emergency response systems.
This tragic event serves as a grim reminder of the risks posed by poorly managed public events and the urgent need for improved infrastructure and planning to ensure the safety of devotees in future festivals.
