Vizhinjam Port Inaugurated: A New Gateway to Global Shipping for India

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala ;May 2, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala, marking a significant milestone in India’s efforts to become a global shipping and logistics powerhouse. With this launch, India joins the league of nations with world-class transshipment infrastructure.

India’s First Deep-Water Transshipment Hub

Strategically located on a major shipping lane, Vizhinjam can handle the world’s largest container vessels. With a natural depth of 24 meters, the port allows docking without extensive dredging, ensuring cost-effectiveness and sustainability.
The ₹8,800 crore project, developed in partnership with the Kerala government and Adani Ports, is a key milestone. In its first phase, the port offers a 1.8-kilometer container berth with a handling capacity of 1.5 million TEUs annually.

High-Tech Features and Strategic Importance

Engineers equipped the port with advanced systems like remote-controlled cranes, AI traffic management, and smart logistics. Its close proximity to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport enhances its strategic appeal for both cargo and crew operations.
PM Modi said Vizhinjam reduces reliance on foreign ports and reflects India’s rising trade self-reliance.

Economic Impact and Future Potential

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan praised the port as a result of long-term planning and collaboration. He announced accelerated efforts to complete future phases to further expand its capacity.
Customs officials have completed clearance procedures, and the port will soon begin cargo operations. The port will generate 5,000+ jobs and spur growth in logistics, warehousing, and ship maintenance.
