In its initial phase, it can handle around 1.5 million TEUs annually, with capacity expansion already in the pipeline. India currently depends on foreign ports for transshipping nearly a third of its container cargo. This dependency results in significant logistical costs. Once fully operational, Vizhinjam could help India save up to $220 million each year in foreign port charges while cutting down shipping time and improving turnaround.

The port’s coastal geography gives it another edge. With minimal littoral drift, there is reduced sediment build-up, which means less need for frequent dredging. This makes Vizhinjam a rare example of an environmentally efficient port infrastructure project.
