Delhi Postpones Electric Bus Launch Due to National Mourning

New Delhi: The Delhi government has postponed the launch of electric buses under the Dedicated Electric Vehicle Integration (DEVI) scheme. This move comes in light of the national mourning declared by the Government of India after the death of Pope Francis, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta confirmed on Tuesday.
CM Rekha Gupta Issues Official Statement
CM Gupta addressed the public on social media platform X:
โDear Delhiites,
Due to the national mourning declared by the Government of India on the demise of His Holiness Pope Francis, the launch of electric buses under the DEVI scheme has been postponed. The new date will be announced soon.โ
Earth Day Plans Temporarily Suspended
Earlier that day, CM Gupta had expressed enthusiasm for the DEVI initiative. She announced plans to introduce 330 new electric buses as part of the cityโs green mission:
โOn this #EarthDay, we are taking a major step toward a greener future with the launch of 330 electric buses under the #DEVI initiative.
This is our effort to make Delhiโs journey cleaner, safer, and more sustainable. Your support matters. Letโs build a healthier tomorrow together.โ
However, due to the national mourning, the planned event has now been put on hold.
National Mourning Observed Across India
Pope Francis passed away at his residence, Casa Santa Marta, in the Vatican on April 21 at the age of 88. In response, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued a nationwide mourning directive.
According to the official announcement:
- Two days of mourning will be observed on April 22 and 23.
- One additional day of mourning will occur on the day of the Popeโs funeral, which will be announced separately.
As part of the mourning:
- The national flag will fly at half-mast at all official buildings.
- The government has canceled all forms of official celebrations and entertainment during this period.
Kerala Declares Three-Day State Mourning
The Kerala government also declared a three-day state mourning. It includes:
- Mourning on April 22 and April 23, and
- An additional day of mourning on the day of the Popeโs funeral.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan paid tribute to the Pope in a heartfelt message on X:
โPope Francis was a beacon of compassion. He stood with the poor and marginalized, challenged global capitalism, and encouraged interfaith dialogue. His legacy will inspire future generations striving for justice and equality.โ
PM Modi Pays Tribute to the Pope
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his grief over the Popeโs death. In a message on X, he wrote:
โDeeply pained by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community.
Pope Francis will always be remembered for his humility, compassion, and courage. From a young age, he served the poor and suffering with love. His affection for the people of India will always be cherished.โ
Conclusion
Although the DEVI electric bus launch has been delayed, the Delhi government remains dedicated to promoting eco-friendly public transport. Authorities are expected to announce a new launch date soon. Meanwhile, the city joins the rest of the country in mourning the loss of a global spiritual leader.
