BJP Criticizes DMK Over Temple Tower Replica on Karunanidhi Memorial

A fresh controversy has sparked in Tamil Nadu over the design of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s memorial at Marina Beach, Chennai. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is under fire from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for placing a replica of a Hindu temple gopuram (tower) atop the memorial.

The BJP has strongly objected to this, accusing the DMK of “playing with Hindu sentiments.” They argue that the use of a religious architectural symbol on a memorial dedicated to Karunanidhi — known for his atheist and rationalist ideologies — is contradictory and offensive to Hindu beliefs.
