CM Mamata Banerjee Calls for Calm Amid Murshidabad Violence

KOLKATA: Amid ongoing tensions following the Murshidabad Violence 2025, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made a heartfelt appeal to all communities on Monday to maintain peace and resist provocation. Speaking on the eve of Poila Baisakh during the inauguration of the Kalighat skywalk, Banerjee urged citizens not to break the law under any circumstances.

“Today, on the eve of Poila Baisakh, I urge everyone to peacefully exercise their democratic rights (to protest) with prior permission,” Banerjee said. “But remember, whoever you are, A, B, C or D, do not take the law in your own hands. Some people may instigate you, but do not be provoked. Those who keep a cool head despite provocations are the true winners. May you all be victorious.”

Mamata’s Statement Comes After Murshidabad Violence 2025

The Chief Minister’s statement follows the violent clashes that erupted in Murshidabad and Bhangar in protest against the Centre’s newly enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act. Although Banerjee did not explicitly reference the violence-hit districts, her message of peace comes at a critical time.

Banerjee expressed disappointment over those attempting to stir religious conflict. “They vilify me, going to the extent of even changing my surname. Which type of people would do this? Religion should not be used for playing irreligious games. Religion means respect, love, humanity, peace, well-being, culture, harmony, unity. There is no greater religion than loving people.”

Murshidabad Violence 2025 Highlights Mamata’s Call for Unity

Reiterating her inclusive ideology — “dharma jar jar, utsav sabar” (religion is individual, festivals belong to all) — Banerjee cited her administration’s inclusive development projects, including those for temples, Muslim religious hubs like Furfura Sharif, and Sikh and Jain places of worship.

“We are there for everyone. We stand by anyone who is harmed, oppressed, persecuted irrespective of religion. Bengal is the land of peace. It is our motherland. Love this land and maintain peace. Let us ensure that everyone — Ma, Ammi, Mother — is fine,” she emphasized.

Kalighat Skywalk Inaugurated During Murshidabad Violence 2025 Unrest

At the same event, CM Banerjee inaugurated the 435-metre-long and 10.5-metre-wide Kalighat skywalk, a project she described as a boost to religious tourism. The structure features three main entry and exit points — on SP Mookerjee Road, Hazra Road, and Kalighat Road.

She thanked hawkers for cooperating with the development and shifting to Hazra Park to facilitate construction. “We have constructed an air-conditioned hawkers’ corner,” she noted. Banerjee also acknowledged Reliance Industries for contributing to the temple’s golden dome.

As tensions persist after the Murshidabad Violence 2025, Banerjee’s words aim to bring a sense of calm and unity during a sensitive period for the state.
