Lightning and Thunderstorms Destroys Eastern India: Crops and Lives Lost

Infrastructure, crops, and power supply suffer major damage in Bihar, UP, and Jharkhand

On 10th and 11th of April a number of intense thunderstorms with lightning and heavy rain destroyed a part of northern and eastern India. The storm killed more than 100 people. It also destroyed crops, infrastructure, and disrupted daily life.

Bihar

Bihar became the worst affected state. It registered more than 80 deaths caused by lightning and storms in only two days. Areas such as Nalanda, Patna, Darbhanga, and Begusarai witnessed extreme weather events. Hail and strong winds uprooted trees and electric poles, causing areas to be flooded and without electricity.

According to officials, Nalanda had recorded over 20 deaths. The other deaths were reported in several areas of Siwan, Katihar, Bhagalpur, and Jehanabad. The Patna Meteorological Centre observed 42.6 mm of rain on Thursday evening.

Government Response and Compensation

Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar has announced a compensation of ₹4 lakh for the families of the deceased. He also ordered the district officials to survey the crop loss, especially with the impending harvesting of wheat, mango, and lychee. 

Uttar Pradesh

In Uttar Pradesh, 22 lives have been lost in 15 districts. Amongst them 13 due to lightning strikes. Strong winds and rain resulted in trees and poles being uprooted, with widespread power cuts and crop losses. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has promised that those affected will receive financial support and relief measures.

Jharkhand

The state of Jharkhand has not released an official figure of deaths. But like others, Jharkhand has also suffered heavy rainfall, strong winds. It caused disruptions to life of locals in areas such as Ranchi and Jamshedpur. Residents reported power outages as well as destroyed fields. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorms and lightning in the state in the next few days.

Weather Warnings and Forecast

The IMD announced orange and yellow alerts for a number of districts in Bihar, UP, and Jharkhand. The possibility of thunderstorms, hail, and lightning are high in these places. Residents are being told to refrain from outdoor activities during storm alerts and to follow other safety instructions.

This was an unpredicted extreme weather event. As It occurred right at the beginning of the harvesting season, the timing is crucial for the agricultural economy. This makes the impact even more severe. Because the frequency and intensity of such phenomena are increasing, experts are calling for measures to improve. Steps such as Early warning systems, disaster response processes, and supporting  vulnerable communities are top priority.
