Protest Shifts to Gandhi Statue Amid Hope and Skepticism

KOLKATA: Teachers who lost their jobs following the Supreme Court’s order continue their protest in central Kolkata under the banner of the Kasba SSC Teachers Protest 2025. On Saturday, they relocated their sit-in from Shahid Minar to the Gandhi statue to sustain public and governmental attention.

Mixed Reactions to Government’s Promises

Following a three-hour meeting on Friday with education minister Bratya Basu, a 13-member delegation of protesting teachers said they were cautiously optimistic. The government agreed to publish mirror images of 22 lakh OMR sheets and a detailed list of eligible and ineligible candidates, pending legal clearance.

“There is no denying that the government wants to save the jobs of eligible candidates legally. Friday’s meeting was productive. But we will keep the pressure on until our demands are fulfilled and we get our jobs back with dignity,” said Chinmoy Mandal, a delegation member.

Protesters Question Effectiveness of OMR Strategy

Despite reassurances, not everyone is convinced. Moumita Ghosh, a former teacher from Sashan, criticized the move. “I’m not hopeful that publishing mirror images of OMR sheets will solve anything. As an eligible candidate, I already have mine. What will I do with 22 lakh more? This will only complicate matters,” she said.

Rupa Banerjee, a teacher from Bhangar, echoed similar concerns. “We’re still in the dark. Even though CBI already has these OMR mirror images, the Supreme Court still cancelled the recruitment.”

Teachers Press On While Awaiting Final Decision

Mrinmoy Das, a jobless teacher from Siliguri, said, “Yes, dialogue has begun, but trust will only build once actions match words. We have seen assurances before, but little change. That’s why we are continuing our protest while staying open to discussions with the chief minister and education minister.”

Bratya Basu reiterated that the lists and OMR documents could be published by April 21, depending on legal advice. He also emphasized the government’s commitment to finding a lawful resolution for untainted, eligible candidates.
