Whatsapp faces widespread outage across India

India witnessed widespread digital disruptions on Saturday evening, with both UPI services and WhatsApp experiencing major outages. This marks the third time this month that UPI platforms have faced issues, leaving users unable to complete essential transactions. As frustrations grew, another blow came when Meta-owned WhatsApp began encountering service disruptions across various parts of the country.

Users of WhatsApp reported trouble with key features such as sending messages and uploading statuses. Downdetector, a platform that monitors service outages, showed a spike in complaints around 4:15 PM, with hundreds of reports pouring in shortly after. The majority flagged issues with message delivery, while a smaller number struggled to log into the app.

The hashtag #WhatsAppDown quickly gained traction on social media, reflecting the scale of the disruption. Despite the growing number of user complaints, WhatsApp has yet to issue an official statement explaining the cause of the outage or when services are expected to be fully restored.

The simultaneous disruption of both WhatsApp and UPI—two services deeply woven into the daily lives of millions—sparked concern and criticism online, raising questions about the digital infrastructure’s reliability.
