Cricket at 2028 LA Olympics: Six Teams, 90 Athletes

Cricket is set to make its long-awaited return to the Olympic Games after 128-years at Los Angeles in 2028. The tournament will feature a six-team T20 format for both men’s and women’s team. Both men’s and women’s events can have 90 players each, enabling participating teams to assemble a 15-member squad.
Cricket last featured at the Olympic Games in the 1900 Paris edition. It was a one-off, two-day match between Great Britain and France. It is now regarded as an unofficial Test match.
Cricket is one of five new sports to feature at the upcoming LA Olympic games. The IOC approved cricket’s inclusion for LA28 two years ago. Other games that are going to be included are baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes) and squash. The Executive Board (EB) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved the event programme and athlete quotas for LA 2028 on April 9.
Qualification criteria and schedule
The officials are yet to finalize the qualification criteria for the 2028 Olympic Games cricket tournament. However, as the host nation, the United States is likely to secure a direct berth, thereby limiting the qualification process to five teams.
Officials have yet to confirm the locations for the cricket venues at the 2028 LA Olympics. They will finalize the competition schedule in the lead-up to the Games.
Current T20 World Cup Champions
The Indian men’s team, led by Rohit Sharma, is the current T20 World Champion in men’s format. For women’s format, New Zealand holds the T20 Champion title. The White ferns were led by Sophie Devine.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) comprises a total of 106 member countries, consisting of 12 full members and 94 associate members. The full members include- Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the West Indies, and Zimbabwe.
