Republic Kannada’s ‘Super 3 Impact’ Prompts Government to Rush Support to Dalit Family
In a dramatic, astonishing display of swift reactions, one such Dalit family desperately living in abject poverty found the report on them overnight into a new life thanks to the one on Republic Kannada. Within 24 hours of that transmission, a team of government officials arrived in the village of the family with a package of essential services meant to bring relief to the beleaguered grandmother and her family.
One such feature is the part of “Super 3 Impact” on this channel, where a Dalit grandmother and her children and grandchildren were shown to be living without basic necessities.
The plight of several months kept piling up before the eyes of local authorities, but the prompt actions of officials moved viewers to action in this regard.
Quick Action by Officers
A high-ranking government delegation of officers was rushed to discuss the situation with the family. Some of those who were dispatched included Manjunath, Panchayat Development Officer; Sharath, Village Accountant; Siddalingaswamy, Revenue Officer; and Purandar, Tehsildar for the locality. Apart from representatives from the departments in charge of food, health and administration, this team of officials was entrusted with relief operations.
This family, along with the team, received very important services that had long been unapproachable:
- An Aadhaar card was issued to the family members so that they can also get numerous benefits from the government.
- A ration card was issued to the family, which makes them earn food security through subsidized grains.
- They were connected to the electricity grid, ending years of darkness in that household.
- The old, collapsed roof which will provide protection against the rain.
- An LPG connection with a stove kit to cook more safely.
- Provisions of some basic food stuff – rice and ragi – to immediately meet the nutritional needs.
- A health check-up of each member in the family and grievance redressal on medical issues.
- Admission to Government hostel for the boy child to ensure his education goes on.
- Issuance of a UDID card, so that the beneficiary would then be entitled to various disability welfare schemes.
- Employment guarantee to the elder son, so that the family enjoyed long-term financial security.
A Life Changed in 24 Hours
While a miraculous change for the family that had long been under neglect, others said change was nothing short of miraculous. The grandmother whose situation seemed hopeless now appreciated the interventions that had drastically improved the living conditions of her family.
Broader Implications for Karnataka’s Leadership
But this story opens up larger issues of governance in Karnataka, a state to which 51 MLAs belong from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Such small gains notwithstanding, the fact remains that this is a deprived Dalit family-or families-that faces deeper problems. This speedy response serves as an example of what could be delivered had the will of politicians and accountability of people merged together.
But the case raises important questions on why such interventions are not more frequent in a state which has high SC/ST representation—36 SC MLAs and 16 ST MLAs in the Karnataka Assembly. For many, systemic issues are thus continued even with official representation, making media vigilance and government responsiveness still important.
The media has been a very powerful tool in finding a solution to this family’s plight-that is the lesson of the report by Republic Kannada-but it is a bitter reminder of how many more wait.
