Supreme Court Issues Notice to NTA Over NEET-UG 2024 Paper Leak Allegations

The Supreme Court of India today issued a notice to the National Testing Agency over allegations of a paper leak in the NEET-UG 2024 examination, in a significant development that could mean the world to thousands of medical aspirants in the country. It came in response to a slew of petitions demanding a fresh examination, alleging that the integrity of the test has been severely compromised.

A vacation bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Ahsanuddin Amanullah said that sanctity has to be maintained regarding crucial examinations. “It is not that simple that because you have done it is sacrosanct. Sanctity has been affected, so we need answers,” the bench said, in a clear reflection over how seriously the court looks at such issues.

NEET-UG is a gateway for students aspiring to study in medical and dental colleges across India. Held on May 5 this year, the examination came under the scanner after allegations of a paper leak arose. Other claims include that the assessment review and the alleged awarding of compensatory marks to students who faced disruptions were not done properly.

Advocate Mathews Nedumpara, appearing for the petitioners, sought the Supreme Court’s intervention to put a stay on the ongoing counselling process for NEET-UG 2024. However, the court refused to put a stay on the counseling and listed the next date of hearing for July 8. “Let the counselling start, we are not stopping the counselling,” the bench remarked, clearly indicating how it is striking a balance between staying put on procedures on the one hand and not causing mere disturbance for students in the process.

Although the NTA states that there has been no misconduct on its part for the NEET-UG exercise, it claims that the entire exercise has been executed in a very transparent and fair manner. But the rising number of petitions and the Supreme Court decision regarding issuing a notice indicates that the concerns made by the candidates cannot be just brushed aside.

The NEET-UG examination isn’t like any other examination, but it is a very important determinant of the future of thousands of students who want to make careers in medicine. Therefore, allegations of a paper leak have raised basic questions about the credibility of the entire examination process. In other words, such perceived imbalances could create significant obstacles for many candidates in the realization of their professional and educational aspirations.

The core issue alleged in the petitions is that there has been a paper leak. The petitioners say that there was no concealment about the fact that the examination paper’s sanctity was leaked. The most disturbing point is the alleged irregularities in the compensatory marking system. The granting of such marks is normally made to candidates who have faced technical faults or other related disturbances during the examination. According to the petitioners, such kind of irregularities further undermines the fairness of the examination, as it might show favoritism to one party over another, considering that the upright bodies portray a fair preservation of the process.

This is where the first step by the Supreme Court has been initiated, issuing notice on the NTA to brace up for a long and tough legal battle where petitioners, NTA, future NEET aspirants, and educational institutions are very keenly watching the outcome.
