France witnessed a fourth consecutive night of unrest as young rioters clashed with police and looted stores, following the fatal police shooting of a teenager. The ongoing turmoil has increased pressure on President Emmanuel Macron, who recently appealed to parents to keep their children off the streets and blamed social media for exacerbating the violence.

Although the situation appeared slightly calmer compared to previous nights, several cities across the country were gripped by turmoil. In the Parisian suburb of Nanterre, where the shooting took place earlier in the week, firefighters worked tirelessly to extinguish the fires set by protesters. The streets were littered with the remnants of burnt cars, while in the neighboring suburb of Colombes, protesters used overturned garbage bins as makeshift barricades.

As the unrest escalated, looters managed to break into a gun shop, making off with weapons. Police later arrested an individual in possession of a hunting rifle. In Marseille, the southern Mediterranean port city, officers apprehended nearly 90 people after groups of protesters set cars on fire and smashed store windows to pilfer their contents.

The eastern city of Lyon also experienced its share of violence, with buildings and businesses being vandalized. Out of the approximately 30 arrests made, a third were related to theft, according to local police. An unauthorized protest earlier in the evening drew over 1,000 people, resulting in fires breaking out in the streets.

By 3 a.m., Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin reported that 471 arrests had been made during the night. The fatal shooting of the 17-year-old, identified only as Nahel, was captured on video, reigniting long-standing tensions between police and young people residing in housing projects and disadvantaged neighborhoods.

Nanterre Mayor Patrick Jarry confirmed that Nahel’s burial is scheduled for Saturday, urging the country to advocate for meaningful changes in disadvantaged areas. The incident has underscored the need for addressing the underlying issues and fostering dialogue between communities and law enforcement to prevent further escalation of tensions.

President Macron’s government faces mounting challenges in dealing with the ongoing unrest, as calls for justice and systemic reforms continue to grow.
