Tragic Suicides Shed Light on Mental Health Crisis in Kota: Urgent Action Needed to Protect Students

Kota, Rajasthan – In a heart-wrenching series of events, two teenage boys lost their lives to suicide in separate incidents in Kota, Rajasthan. These incidents have once again highlighted the alarming mental health concerns faced by teenagers who flock to the city every year to prepare for competitive exams in engineering and medical fields. The boys, both in their teenage years and aspiring to crack the NEET entrance exam for medical education, had recently moved to Kota to pursue their dreams.

One of the boys hailed from Uttar Pradesh, while the other was originally from Bihar. They had relocated to Kota within the past two months, immersing themselves in rigorous study schedules and intense preparation for the NEET exam. Unfortunately, the immense pressure and expectations placed on these young minds seemed to have taken a toll on their mental well-being.

The two boys resided in separate accommodations in the Vigyan Nagar locality of Kota. Tragically, one of them was discovered deceased on Monday, while the other met a similar fate the following day. The news of their untimely deaths has sent shockwaves through the community, sparking concerns about the mental health challenges faced by students in this education hub.

In another distressing incident, a 17-year-old boy from Bihar was fortunate enough to be saved after his parents sensed his emotional distress and reached out to childcare services. During a conversation, the teenager exhibited signs of being on the edge, prompting his parents to take immediate action. The boy had been studying in Kota for approximately three months, preparing for engineering entrance exams. He had been experiencing acute homesickness, which had escalated to the point where he threatened to take “an extreme step” during a phone call with his parents on Sunday.

Worried about their child’s well-being, the boy’s father immediately contacted Childline, the government’s counselling service. The police acted swiftly upon being informed of the situation and located the teenager in the Rangbadi area within 20 minutes. He was successfully rescued and handed over to his relieved parents upon their arrival in Kota the following day.

Kota, situated in southern Rajasthan, is renowned for its coaching centers that cater to students aspiring to crack competitive exams for engineering and medical courses in esteemed institutions. However, in recent years, the city has gained notoriety for the distressing number of student suicides resulting from stress and the disappointment of academic setbacks. Last year alone, Kota witnessed at least 15 cases of student suicides. This year has already seen a staggering count of 14 suicides, signaling an alarming trend that demands urgent attention.

The incidents of teenage suicides in Kota serve as a grim reminder of the immense pressure placed on young minds and the need to address mental health issues among students. It is essential for educational institutions, parents, and society at large to prioritize mental well-being and create supportive environments that promote healthy coping mechanisms and stress management. Efforts must be made to raise awareness, provide counseling services, and foster a nurturing atmosphere that allows students to pursue their dreams without compromising their mental health.

The authorities and stakeholders in Kota must collaborate to implement comprehensive measures that prioritize mental health support, offering guidance, counseling, and resources to students navigating the demanding world of competitive exams. It is crucial to recognize that academic success should not come at the expense of young lives, and concerted efforts must be made to ensure the well-being and safety of the students who come to Kota seeking a brighter future.
