Kolkata, South Bengal Remain Under Rain Spell as Heavy Showers Persist

Dark clouds and intermittent showers are expected to remain a familiar sight across Kolkata and South Bengal on Tuesday, as monsoon activity progresses to bring widespread rainfall to the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted rain and thundershowers at most places, with isolated areas likely to receive heavy rainfall.

The western districts of South Bengal are expected to see the most intense activity. Purulia, Bankura, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Jhargram and West Midnapore may record heavy rainfall of 7โ€“11 cm in secluded  pockets. Thunderstorms, lightning and turbulent winds of 30โ€“40 kmph are also possible in parts of the region.

Kolkata is likely to endure intermittent rain and thundershowers. The city has already experienced substantial rainfall, with 50โ€“100 mm recorded across different parts in the preceding 24 hours, affecting traffic and causing waterlogging in some areas.

The unsettled weather is expected to persist across South Bengal over the next several days, although the intensity of rainfall may vary from one district to another. Residents, particularly those in low-lying areas, may need to remain cautious as further spells of heavy rain could cause temporary waterlogging.

For commuters in Kolkata and neighbouring districts, the continuing rain could mean slower traffic, waterlogged stretches and sudden thunderstorms during the day. The IMD has also advised caution during lightning and gusty winds.
