“Teaching Marathi is a must in all schools across Maharashtra”, warns state Education minister, Dadaji Bhuse

Strong actions to be claimed against any violations

Mumbai, 16 March 2026: Education Minister, Dadaji Bhuse has raised concern regarding the teaching of Marathi in all schools across the state of Maharashtra. Last Friday, during an assembly meeting, the state Government had a meeting, claiming Marathi a compulsory language in all schools.

Irrespective of mediums and management boards, it is a duty of the schools operating within the state, to teach Marathi. Responding to a complaint, raised by MLA Haroon Khan, regarding a particular school, Bhuse stated that according to the Government notification issued on March, 2020, it has been made mandatory to teach Marathi. He further said that in some International and National boards, it can be taught as second language or third language. He even clarified that under no circumstances Marathi can be excluded.

After issue being raised by the MLA, the State Government has announced proper inspection to be done all over the state and if any school found that fail to teach Marathi as a compulsory subject  from classes 1 to 10, will be evoked recognition. The minister emphasized that the state language holds cultural and administrative importance and must be taught to the students within the state. He further said that all the official works within the state are conducted in Marathi, so it is important for the next generation to stay enrooted to their language.

The minister appealed to the school management and the educational boards to cooperate with the government in implementing the policy. He said that the objective is not to create difficulties for schools but to ensure that every student studying in Maharashtra gains basic knowledge of Marathi.  He further urged the members of the Assembly to inform the government if they come across any schools that are not implementing the rule. According to the minister, such information would help the authorities conduct prompt inquiries and ensure that the law is implemented effectively.
