Azad argued that the trophy represents the entire country and not any single religion. According to him, the trophy belongs to 1.4 billion Indians of every faith. He questioned why the trophy was taken only to a temple and not to other places of worship like a mosque, church, or gurudwara.

In his statement, Azad pointed out that the 1983 Indian team under Kapil Dev had players from different religious backgrounds. He said that when that team won the World Cup, the victory symbolised the unity of the entire nation rather than any one religious identity.

Azad also mentioned players like Mohammed Siraj and Sanju Samson in his remarks, saying that the trophy had never been paraded in places of worship linked to their faiths. His comments quickly went viral on social media and triggered a strong reaction from fans and former players.

While some people agreed with his viewpoint about national representation, many others felt the criticism was unnecessary during a moment of celebration for Indian cricket.

Gautam Gambhir Hits Back

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir responded strongly to Azad’s remarks. Speaking in an interview, Gambhir said the controversy was unnecessary and disrespectful to the players who worked hard to win the World Cup.

Gambhir made it clear that the team’s visit to the temple was a personal act of faith and not a political or religious statement. He emphasised that the focus should remain on the achievement of the players rather than on debates that could overshadow the victory.
