Iran War Raises Fears of Deepening Water Crisis Amid Climate Stress

The ongoing conflict involving Iran has raised concerns about a worsening water crisis in the Middle East, as experts warn that war could further strain already fragile water systems in the region. Analysts say the conflict risks damaging vital infrastructure and disrupting water supplies in a region already facing severe climate pressures.
Even before the latest escalation, Iran had been grappling with a long-standing water crisis driven by drought, climate change, and declining rainfall. The country experienced one of its worst droughts in decades, forcing authorities to impose water rationing in several areas as reservoirs and rivers ran critically low.
The war has introduced a new dimension to the crisis, with concerns that key infrastructure such as desalination plants and water facilities could become strategic targets. In the arid Gulf region, many countries rely heavily on desalinated seawater for drinking supplies, making such plants critical to civilian life. Damage to these facilities could quickly trigger widespread water shortages.
Experts note that the region’s dependence on a limited number of desalination plants makes it particularly vulnerable during conflicts. Any disruption could leave millions without access to drinking water, especially in smaller Gulf states that lack large water reserves.
Climate change has further intensified the crisis. Rising temperatures, declining rainfall, and increasing evaporation have reduced available freshwater resources across Iran and neighbouring countries, pushing already stressed water systems closer to collapse.
The convergence of war, climate stress, and fragile infrastructure has therefore raised alarms among analysts, who warn that water security could become one of the most serious humanitarian challenges in the region if the conflict continues.
