Hooghly : A 32-year-old migrant worker from Dewanbheri village in Singur, Hooghly district, was allegedly beaten to death in Uttar Pradesh, with his wife claiming that prolonged harassment over their use of the Bengali language and suspicions of being Bangladeshi ultimately led to his murder.

The victim has been identified as Sheikh Saidulla, a resident of Dewanbheri in Singur, Hooghly. He had been living and working in Uttar Pradesh for a long time, employed at a gold jewellery shop. His wife and child were also staying there with him.

Recently, his wife received summons for a hearing related to the SIR (Special Intensive Revision) process in West Bengal, prompting her to return to the village. The plan was for the young man to follow her back on the 19th. Tragically, his body arrived in a coffin before he could return.

According to allegations, Saidulla was beaten to death in Uttar Pradesh. His wife, Armina Begum, claims that the couple had been facing prolonged harassment and suspicion of being Bangladeshi simply because they spoke in Bengali. She alleges that someone took advantage of the opportunity to murder him. A complaint has already been filed at the local police station there.

Incidentally, this is not the first such incident. For a long time, allegations have been raised regarding the harassment of Bengali workers in other states. Even Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been vocal in protest. Several workers who were subjected to abuse in other states have been brought back home through initiatives taken by the Trinamool Congress.

Notably, on the same day, another incident came to light in Jharkhand, where a migrant worker was allegedly murdered, leading to widespread unrest in Beldanga.
