OBC List Under Fresh Scrutiny as NCBC Flags 35 Entries

The National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) has recommended that the Union government remove 35 communities from West Bengal’s Central OBC list. It cited a re-evaluation of entries notified in 2014, where 37 communities were approved.

This advisory comes just before the Lok Sabha elections and has revived a national debate. The Social Justice Ministry confirmed the recommendation in Parliament, though no final decision has been taken.

BJP leaders called the NCBC’s move a “correction.” They describe it as politically motivated inclusions made during earlier Trinamool Congress administrations. They allege several Muslim-majority communities were added without adequate data.

However, TMC has denied this, stating that caste and community entries were based solely on socio-economic indicators and followed due procedure. The party also points to ongoing judicial scrutiny, including earlier High Court orders that questioned portions of the updated state list.

The change would primarily affect access to central OBC reservation benefits. This includes the 27% quota in central government jobs, admissions in centrally funded institutions, and scholarships. State benefits would remain only if the communities continue to be listed under the State OBC List. Yet it also signifies a larger question: What does a credible, politically neutral OBC classification look like?

Analysts say delisting could affect thousands who rely on central quotas for employment and education. However, officials indicate that, final decision will follow further review and legal consultations.
