Buddha Nullah Flood Brings Toxic Water Into Ludhiana Homes.

September 01, 2025 | Ludhiana, Punjab

Heavy rain in Ludhiana caused Buddha Nullah flood water to overflow into residential colonies, creating chaos for thousands of families. The foul, black water carried industrial waste, untreated sewage, and toxic chemicals, turning homes into pools of pollution. Families faced severe health risks, lost belongings, and lived in fear of diseases, while local anger grew against repeated administrative failure and slow responses.

Buddha Nullah Flood Hits Homes

Residents in Dhoka Mohalla, Dharampura, Shivaji Nagar, Kashmir Nagar, Kundanpuri, Shingar Cinema Road, and Harcharan Nagar found their houses submerged in polluted floodwater that spread with alarming speed. The water smelled unbearable, carried floating garbage, and left chemical stains on walls, floors, and furniture. Families had no time to protect their essentials, and many described the scene as living in โ€œhellโ€ since water mixed with industrial toxins made breathing difficult inside their own houses.

Residentsโ€™ Anger Intensifies

People questioned why authorities failed to prepare despite clear weather forecasts that warned of heavy rain. A Dharampura resident shouted that life had become unbearable with sewage-filled water rushing inside homes, forcing families to shift upstairs. Families used buckets, small pumps, and makeshift barriers but still failed to stop the toxic flow. Children fell sick with rashes and stomach infections, and elders demanded immediate relief and compensation for repeated losses.

Political Leaders Visit Flooded Areas

AAP MLAs Madan Lal Bagga and Ashok Prashar Pappi inspected the worst-hit flooded zones as public outrage increased. Bagga arrived on a tractor to reach stranded families in narrow lanes, while Pappi supervised workers stacking sandbags along weakened banks to stop further overflow. Both promised relief and pledged to push long-term projects, yet residents doubted the claims. Their frustration grew because every year the problem repeats, and despite visits, no permanent solution has ever been delivered.

Buddha Nullah Flood Carries Toxic Waste

The Buddha Nullah flood spread untreated industrial effluents, domestic sewage, and garbage across Ludhiana streets, leaving colonies unsafe. The 14-km drain has for decades dumped waste directly into the Sutlej River without effective checks. Along with Ganda Nullah, it has remained one of Punjabโ€™s most dangerous pollution sources and continues to poison the environment. People feared that contaminated water entering their kitchens and bathrooms would increase skin infections, dengue, and waterborne disease outbreaks.

Administrative Response Remains Slow

The Deputy Commissioner of Ludhiana visited flooded areas, interacted with residents, and assured them of strict action. Officials deployed pumps to clear water from lanes and announced extra sanitation drives. Municipal Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal instructed teams to drain colonies immediately and monitor nullah levels. However, residents criticized the slow pace, arguing that officials arrive only after disasters strike. They demanded long-term cleaning, desilting, and strict action against factories dumping waste into the drain unchecked.

Urgent Need for Permanent Solution

The Buddha Nullah flood has once again exposed Ludhianaโ€™s fragile drainage system and complete lack of preparedness. Residents want immediate desilting of nullahs, stricter waste controls, and permanent embankments along vulnerable areas. Without decisive action and accountability, every heavy rainfall will bring back the same misery and damage. Authorities face growing public anger, and expectations now rest on real implementation instead of hollow promises. People said their patience has ended, and this time they want change.
