Kanpur Horror: 21-Year-Old Student Mauled by Stray Dogs, Needs 17 Stitches

Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh

A 21-year-old student faced a horrifying attack by stray dogs in Shyam Nagar, Kanpur, leaving her with deep injuries and 17 stitches on her face.

On August 20, Vaishnavi Sahu, a BBA student, walked home from college when she encountered chaos near Mudhavan Park. A group of dogs clashed with monkeys, and in the middle of this fight, three stray dogs suddenly turned on her.

The dogs dragged Vaishnavi down, bit her repeatedly, and tore her right cheek into two parts. She screamed in pain and cried for help, but the dogs refused to let go. Terrified residents rushed out, carrying sticks to chase the animals away. Their quick action saved her from even worse injuries.

Vaishnavi’s family immediately took her to Kanshiram Hospital. Doctors stitched her torn cheek and nose, treating the severe wounds. She received 17 stitches and now struggles to eat or speak properly. Her family feeds her liquid food with a straw as she recovers.

Her uncle, Ashutosh, revealed that Vaishnavi never imagined such danger while returning home. “She was walking back from college as usual. Suddenly, the dogs attacked her. We are still in shock,” he said.

The brutal incident has shaken the Shyam Nagar area. Locals now fear walking outside and demand strict action from authorities. Residents complain that stray animals roam freely, creating constant risk for children, students, and the elderly.

Vaishnavi’s family urged the government to take urgent measures including sterilization, relocation, or sheltering of stray dogs to prevent such attacks. They believe this tragedy should force officials to prioritize citizen safety.

The attack also comes at a time when the Supreme Court is reviewing stray dog issues across India, especially sterilization and control measures. The Kanpur case adds to growing public concern over frequent stray dog attacks in urban neighborhoods.

Doctors continue to monitor Vaishnavi’s condition. She remains in hospital care, but her recovery may take weeks. For now, the community stands in fear, hoping her case sparks quick and effective government action.
