Jackalopes Are Real? Experts Warn of ‘Horned’ Rabbits
A bizarre and concerning phenomenon has experts issuing a public health warning: rabbits with ‘horns’ are reportedly appearing in various parts of the United States. This isn’t a new species or a mythical creature like the jackalope; instead, it’s a grim reality stemming from a viral infection. These growths are tumors caused by the Shope papillomavirus (SPV), also known as cottontail rabbit papillomavirus (CRPV). The virus causes keratinous tumors that can resemble horns, giving the rabbits a grotesque, fantastical appearance.
The tumors, which are benign, can grow to significant sizes, often appearing on or around the rabbit’s head. While not cancerous, they can be debilitating for the animal. Large tumors can obstruct a rabbit’s vision, making it a target for predators, or interfere with its ability to eat, leading to starvation. The virus is primarily spread through mosquito bites and other biting insects, which act as vectors, or by direct contact with an infected rabbit.
Experts are advising the public to stay away from these infected animals. While there’s no evidence that SPV can infect humans, it’s always best to exercise caution. The virus is highly contagious among rabbits, and human interaction could potentially facilitate its spread to other animals. Pet rabbits, in particular, should be kept away from wild rabbits to prevent infection.
The resurgence of these “horned” rabbits is a cause for concern for wildlife experts and conservationists. The virus can significantly impact rabbit populations, and a widespread outbreak could have cascading effects on the ecosystem, affecting predators that rely on rabbits for food. Public awareness is key to mitigating the spread. Anyone who spots a rabbit with these growths should report it to their local wildlife authority, but under no circumstances should they attempt to handle or capture the animal. This is not a situation to be treated as a novelty or an opportunity for a viral video; it’s a serious wildlife health issue that requires careful and considered management to protect both animal and public well-being.
