BSF Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw Repatriated After 21 Days in Pakistani Custody

Attari-Wagah Border, May 14, 2025  Pakistan Rangers handed over Border Security Force (BSF) constable Purnam Kumar Shaw to Indian officials at the Attari-Wagah border after being held for twenty-one days, a major diplomatic development. Following ongoing diplomatic initiatives between the two countries, the exchange took place at 10:30 AM on Wednesday. Among the Indian personnel engaged in the exchange was Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw, resident of Rishra in the Hooghly district of West Bengal and member of the 182nd Battalion of the BSF. India repatriated Muhammadullah, a Pakistani Ranger arrested in Rajasthan on May 3, as part of a reciprocating gesture. While on operating assignment in the Ferozepur area of Punjab, Shaw accidentally crossed into Pakistani territory on April 23. Pakistani Rangers apprehended him and held him in their custody for twenty-one days. Continuous diplomatic contacts including weekly flag meetings and BSF-Pakistan Rangers communication guaranteed his release. Shaw was repatriated on May 14, 2025 following an event on April 23, 2025. The handover occurred at Attari-Wagah border, a significant crossover between Pakistan and India. Operational conditions close to the border caused Shaw’s unplanned crossing into Pakistani land. Personnel transfers were arranged to preserve diplomatic etiquette between the two nations and support humanistic concerns. To arrange Shaw’s release, the BSF started monthly flag meetings and stayed in contact with Pakistan Rangers. These initiatives came to fruition in the synchronized interchange at the Attari-Wagah frontier. Relief and delight greeted Shaw’s return from his family. Expressing deep thanks to the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his wife Rajani Shaw said, “He brought back my suhag,” a traditional term indicating the return of marital happiness.
