Gaza Faces Worsening Malnutrition Crisis as Aid Blockade Continues

Food shortages and aid blockades leave Gaza’s population vulnerable to widespread malnutrition.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached a critical low. Acute malnutrition among children is surging as food supplies run out. Aid remains blocked. The World Food Programme (WFP) announced on Thursday that it has exhausted its food stocks in the territory. It warned that further delays in humanitarian access could result in widespread starvation.

“The number of children arriving at health centers with signs of wasting is increasing rapidly,” said a spokesperson for UNICEF. “We are witnessing a nutritional emergency unfold in real-time.”

Majority of women and children in the region are now unable to meet even their minimum daily food requirements. Families are relying on severely limited rations. These rations often consist of rice and unsafe drinking water. They have no access to vegetables, dairy, or protein.

Gaza’s already fragile healthcare system is overwhelmed. Hospitals are struggling to operate amid severe shortages of fuel, medical supplies, and equipment. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that health facilities can no longer treat malnourished children at the scale required.

“Without immediate intervention, the consequences will be catastrophic,” warned the WHO in a joint statement with other aid agencies.

Despite growing calls from international agencies, humanitarian convoys remain stranded at border crossings. Over 116,000 metric tons of aid, including food, are waiting for clearance, according to WFP officials. The organization had prepared enough food to support one million people for four months. However, they have been unable to deliver it due to restrictions.

Food prices in Gaza have skyrocketed in recent weeks. A report from the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) notes significant increases in prices for essential goods. The increase ranges between 29% and 1,400% since March. Most bakeries have shut down due to a lack of wheat flour and fuel, further limiting food availability.

International humanitarian organizations are urging immediate, unrestricted access to deliver aid into Gaza. UNICEF, WHO, and the WFP are calling on all parties to prioritize civilian welfare and uphold international humanitarian law.

“This is not just a crisis of logistics , it is a crisis of humanity,” said a WFP representative. “Every hour counts.”
