Kenyan President William Ruto is strengthening ties with China during his five-day visit to Beijing, highlighting the shifting dynamics in global diplomacy amid the ongoing trade war between the U.S. and China. On Thursday, Ruto pledged to further deepen Kenyaโ€™s relationship with China, expressing gratitude for the significant financial support provided by Beijing for various Kenyan sectors, including health, education, and disaster relief.

This visit marks Rutoโ€™s third trip to China since taking office in 2022 and comes at a time when both Kenya and China are seeking to expand their bilateral relationship amid escalating tariffs between Washington and Beijing. โ€œWe want to learn from Chinaโ€™s remarkable journey of transformation in governance, economic development, and global leadership,โ€ said Ruto, emphasizing Kenya’s desire to tap into China’s growth model.

Kenya Shifting Foreign Policy Focus

Rutoโ€™s stance on China contrasts with his earlier position. As an evangelical Christian with humble roots, he initially leaned towards Western support, particularly from the United States. However, with U.S. President Donald Trump retreating from Africa and imposing tariffs on trade partners, Ruto is increasingly turning to China for partnership and economic support. The shift in foreign policy highlights Kenyaโ€™s desire to diversify its diplomatic and economic ties, especially as trade barriers grow between the U.S. and China.

China-Kenya Partnership and Belt and Road Initiative

The collaboration between Kenya and China is growing, with Kenya being a key participant in Chinaโ€™s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a project designed to connect Africa, Asia, and Europe through massive infrastructure projects. China has invested billions in Kenya, funding major projects such as roads, ports, and the Mombasa-Nairobi railway. โ€œChina attaches great importance to China-Kenya relations,โ€ Chinese President Xi Jinping remarked during his meeting with Ruto, emphasizing Beijingโ€™s commitment to strengthening ties with the East African nation.

Trade War and Global Impact

Rutoโ€™s visit also comes amid rising global concerns over the escalating trade war between the U.S. and China. In a speech at Peking University, Ruto criticized the current world order, calling the United Nations Security Council โ€œbroken, dysfunctional, and no longer fit for purpose.โ€ He argued that the tariffs imposed by Trump could โ€œdeal a death blowโ€ to the existing global system, which many African nations rely on for trade with the U.S.

Kenya, like many African nations, faces uncertainty as tariffs threaten industries that depend on exports to the U.S. While the U.S. is a major export destination for Kenya, China remains the countryโ€™s largest supplier of goods. In light of these tensions, Kenya sees growing importance in diversifying its international partnerships.

New Agreements and Future Prospects

Following the talks between the two leaders, Kenya and China signed a range of agreements covering security, technology, and economic cooperation. The agreements also include plans for further infrastructure projects, particularly in the railway sector, as well as the establishment of a new Kenyan consulate in Guangzhou.

As Kenya navigates the complexities of global trade and diplomacy, its growing ties with China are set to shape the countryโ€™s future development. With Rutoโ€™s vision to help Kenya’s struggling poor and reduce debt, Beijingโ€™s support may become even more crucial in the years to come.
