Pakistan Suspends All Bilateral Agreements with India, Including Shimla Accord

Islamabad, April 24, 2025 — In a dramatic escalation of diplomatic tensions, the Government of Pakistan on Thursday announced the suspension of all bilateral agreements with India, including the landmark Shimla Agreement of 1972. The move comes in direct response to India’s recently unveiled five-step retaliation plan, following the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
Response to India’s Retaliation Plan
The Pakistani government’s decision follows a sharp diplomatic and strategic response from New Delhi, which came after a terror attack in Pahalgam claimed the lives of at least 26 Indian tourists. The attack has been linked to The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), prompting India to announce a series of countermeasures including diplomatic downgrades and cross-border restrictions.
In retaliation, Pakistan has not only condemned India’s actions but also declared the immediate suspension of all formal bilateral frameworks that have governed Indo-Pak relations for decades.
Shimla Agreement Now Defunct
Among the agreements suspended is the Shimla Accord, a key diplomatic treaty signed in 1972 following the end of the Indo-Pak War of 1971, which led to the creation of Bangladesh. The accord laid the foundation for peaceful resolution of disputes and emphasized bilateral dialogue between the two countries.
Pakistan’s move to nullify the Shimla Agreement signals a further erosion of diplomatic norms and adds a new layer of complexity to an already volatile relationship between the nuclear-armed neighbors.
Rising Regional Tensions
With diplomatic bridges now severed, regional observers warn of increased instability in South Asia. Both governments have taken hardened stances, and any further escalation could have significant implications for regional peace and security.
India has yet to issue an official statement in response to Pakistan’s latest announcement.
