New Delhi, April 14. 2025
New York has officially declared April 14, as “Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar Day” on his 134th birth anniversary. This proclamation, announced by Mayor Eric Adams, serves to acknowledge Dr. Ambedkar’s lasting impact on the advocacy for equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891, in Mhow, India. He distinguished himself as a scholar, earning a PhD in economics from Columbia University. He also earned a DSc from the London School of Economics.
As the chair of the committee that drafted India’s Constitution, Dr. Ambedkar played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s foundational document. His advocacy against social injustices, including the practice of untouchability, exploitation of farmers and tenants left a lasting global impact. His message, “educate, agitate, organize,” continues to inspire movements for justice and equity.
“After experiencing severe caste discrimination in his youth, he spent the rest of his life fighting for diversity, equity, and inclusion,” Adams said.
Dr. Ambedkar’s impact transcends boundaries, with his birth anniversary recognized in over 100 countries. National parliaments, United Nations missions, and academic institutions commemorate it to reflect this international recognition.
Deelip Mhatre – The man behind this mission
The initiative to establish April 14th as Dr. BR Ambedkar Day was spearheaded by Deelip Mhaske. He is the president of the Foundation for Human Horizon and a prominent Ambedkarite leader. Mhaske has been a tireless advocate for Dr. Ambedkar’s teachings at the international level for many years.
Reflecting on the proclamation, Mhaske said, “Thank you, Mayor Adams. This proclamation is more than symbolic—it is a moral declaration that positions New York as a global capital for human rights and justice. And thank you to Deputy Commissioner Dilip Chauhan—your tireless efforts have made this a beacon of hope for the 1.5 billion people who remain oppressed worldwide.”
