Maharashtra Struggles With Heatwave: 34 Suffer Heatstroke in 10 Days

A heatwave in Maharashtra has prompted health alerts, raising concerns about safety protocols. Buldhana leads with six cases, and the state reported 34 heatstroke incidents in early April, surpassing last year’s figures.

MUMBAI: The first ten days of April have already seen a worrying spike in heatstroke cases across Maharashtra, with 34 people affected – outpacing the 24 cases reported during the same time last year. As a relentless heatwave sweeps through several districts, the state has issued health alerts, raising serious concerns about whether current safety measures are enough to protect people from the scorching temperatures.

Although officials haven’t verified any heat-related fatalities, an 11-year-old boy in Buldhana fainted and died while being taken to the hospital.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released yellow alerts for multiple regions, suggesting a possible 3–4°C increase in temperature alongside elevated humidity levels. Physicians emphasize the risks of heatstroke, which can be deadly without quick treatment. Proper first aid involves relocating victims to cooler locations and offering them fluids. In spite of these obstacles, Maharashtra has started implementing measures to enhance climate resilience, entering into a MoU with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) to improve governance related to sustainable cooling.

Hospitals are creating specialized beds for heat emergencies, and a climate-conscious budget now requires all departments to factor climate risks into their planning. Nevertheless, rural regions continue to struggle with a lack of qualified medical staff, hindering precise documentation of heat-related incidents, underscoring the necessity for enhanced awareness and resources for managing heatstroke.
