3D Telemedicine Trials Offer New Hope for Specialist Care in Ghana

KOFORIDUA, Ghana – In an innovative step aimed at addressing the severe shortage of specialist doctors in Ghana, a trial of 3D telemedicine technology is now underway, transforming the way patients access remote specialist care. This groundbreaking initiative—developed in collaboration between Microsoft Research and Ghanaian medical institutions—utilizes advanced 3D imaging technology to simulate face-to-face consultations, all from a mobile platform.

Bringing Specialists to Remote Communities

The system, which leverages Microsoft’s Holoportation™ technology, uses an array of high-definition cameras and depth sensors to capture a patient’s image from multiple angles inside a mobile van. The resulting 3D model is then transmitted via commercial broadband to remote doctors who join the consultation online. This immersive setup allows several specialists from different parts of the world to examine a patient’s condition in real time, discuss the case collectively, and offer a more accurate diagnosis—all without requiring the patient to leave their community.

Spencer Fowers, the principal software developer and 3D telemedicine project lead at Microsoft Research, explained the concept:“The idea behind the van is to allow it to travel to those remote villages that don’t have specialized care … to perform a pre or post-surgical consult,” he said.

Real-life Impact on Patients

For patients like 46-year-old Charles Owusu Aseku, who has battled a persistent keloid on his neck since 2002, this technology is a potential game changer. After multiple unsuccessful surgeries and consultations abroad, Aseku joined the trial and experienced consultations from specialists based in Rwanda, Scotland, and Brazil.“I see a lot of doctors here and I am very happy because the combined experience of each might finally lead to a solution,” Aseku remarked.

Similarly, 68-year-old George Opoku—a patient from a rural village in the Eastern Region—benefited from the trial by avoiding a lengthy trip to Accra. His participation in the remote consultation saved him considerable time and money, as his doctor arranged a 3D evaluation for his sarcoma-related condition closer to home. “I was glad not to have to travel all the way to Korle-Bu because it would have been expensive and exhausting,” Opoku said.

Enhancing Collaboration and Overcoming Challenges

The 3D telemedicine trial, initially piloted in a mobile unit stationed near Koforidua Regional Hospital, builds on successful earlier tests conducted in Scotland. By providing a 360-degree live view, the system enables doctors to virtually “walk around” a patient’s model, examine complex anatomical areas, and even use digital drawing tools to mark surgical plans on the model during consultations. While the potential benefits are clear—increased diagnostic accuracy, improved surgical planning, and enhanced patient education—the initiative does face practical challenges. Stable internet connectivity remains a hurdle in many remote areas, though early reports suggest that mobile broadband solutions available in Ghana are helping to mitigate this issue.

Consultant plastic surgeon Dr. Kwame Darko, one of the principal investigators involved in the trial at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, noted that the technology could allow more efficient use of the limited available specialists.“With this approach, a patient could be reviewed by several experts in one session, significantly improving access to high-quality care,” he explained.

A Model for the Future

By reducing the need for costly and time-consuming travel, and by allowing multiple expert opinions in a single consultation, the 3D telemedicine model shows promise for transforming healthcare delivery in Ghana and beyond. Experts hope that as the technology is refined and its benefits further validated, similar systems will be deployed across Africa—bringing specialized care closer to the millions in remote communities who have long been underserved.

This real-world trial marks a significant milestone in international medical collaboration, suggesting that technology can play a crucial role in overcoming geographic barriers to healthcare and ensuring that every patient has access to the best available medical expertise.
