April 2025: 5.8-Magnitude Earthquake shakes Yilan County, Taiwan

On April 9, 2025 at 9:53 a.m Taiwan’s northeastern county of Yilan was struck by a deep 5.8-magnitude earthquake at a depth of 72.4 km. The shake was felt in the capital, Taipei. The quake lasted only a few seconds and there was no immediate damage.

According to Taiwan’s fire department, there were no reports of damage, including at the island’s science parks where much of Taiwan’s semiconductor manufacturing takes place.

Taiwan is located near the meeting point of the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate, making it prone to earthquakes. Over the years, the island has experienced several significant seismic events. For instance, in 1999, the Jiji earthquake had a magnitude of 7.3 and resulted in over 2,000 casualties.

Most recently, in April 2024, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Hualien County, resulting in at least 19 deaths and significant damage to infrastructure.
