The Curse of the 24-Hour Feed: How Social Media Overconsumption Is Changing Us

The Pressure to Stay Updated
Thereโs this strange pressure these days to stay updatedโto know what happened in the last hour, to watch the newest reel, to consume content as if itโs oxygen. But have you ever paused and wondered: what did I even watch today? I do. And most days, I donโt remember. Because none of it stays.
Content Has an Expiry Date Now
We live in a time where content gets old in 24 hours. Not because itโs not good, but because something newer, shinier, more relatable (or more outrageous) is already waiting to take its place. We scroll for hours, eyes tired, brains numb, hearts distractedโand yet we call it rest. But itโs not rest. Itโs noise.
Curated Feeds, Curated Thoughts
Social media doesnโt show us the world. It shows us our world, curated by algorithms that decide what we like before we even know what we want. You think youโre choosing what you see, but the truth is that the app already chose for you. And in that, weโve stopped thinking. Weโve stopped asking why. We just consume. Because everyone is watching it.Because if you donโt, youโll feel left behind. Because silence feels heavier now.
The Fear of Irrelevance
Thereโs this idea that if youโre not up-to-date, youโre irrelevant. So we chase trends. We post, repost, try to stay visible. But visibility isnโt the same as being seen. Sometimes I wonder if weโve forgotten how to just sit with something. To read a long article. To watch a slow film.To listen, deeply. To let art breathe before we scroll past it.
When Everything Becomes Content
Iโm not saying social media is evil. Itโs not. It connects us, makes us laugh, teaches us things. But when everything becomes contentโeven grief, even joy, even healingโthen nothing feels sacred anymore. Itโs like weโre all standing in a digital storm, hoping to be heard above the noise.
So, What Do We Do?
I donโt have a grand answer. But maybe we start by noticing. By asking ourselves: why am I watching this? Maybe we take a few minutes before bed to just exist without a screen. Maybe we start supporting content that doesnโt go viral but stays with us. And maybe, just maybeโwe remind ourselves that itโs okay to not know the latest thing. Because truth doesnโt expire in 24 hours. And not everything meaningful comes with a trending sound.
