US Judge Halts Deportation of Indian Researcher Badar Khan Suri

Washington D.C., March 21, 2025 – An American judge has stopped the deportation of Indian researcher Badar Khan Suri. This decision follows his arrest and a threat to send him out of the country. The reason given was his alleged connections to Hamas.

Judge Patricia Tolliver Giles, working in the Eastern District of Virginia Court, made the order on Thursday. She stated that Badar Khan Suri must stay in the United States until the court says otherwise.

Concerns Over Academic Freedom

Badar Khan Suri is a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. His detention has raised concerns. People in the academic world fear that freedom of research and speech is being challenged. This is happening just two months into President Trump’s new term.

His lawyer is demanding his release. The lawyer called the arrest a “targeted, retaliatory detention.” They believe it is meant to silence Badar Khan Suri. It also aims to restrict the speech of others who support Palestinian rights.

Support from ACLU and Georgetown University to Indian Researcher Badar Khan Suri

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is also supporting Badar Khan Suri. They have filed an emergency motion to stop the deportation.The ACLU reports that authorities are holding Suri at an immigration detention center in Louisiana.

Sophia Gregg, an ACLU lawyer, said that the government is trying to silence dissent. She believes that taking someone from their home and detaining them based on their political views is unconstitutional.

Georgetown University is also backing Indian researcher Badar Khan Suri. The university stated that they were not aware of his involvement in any illegal activity. They confirmed that they had granted him a visa to continue his research on peacebuilding in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Allegations and Defense

Law enforcement arrested Badar Khan Suri outside his home in Virginia on Monday night. They accuse him of spreading Hamas propaganda and having close ties with a suspected terrorist.
