Priyanka Gandhi to Contest Wayanad Bypoll as Rahul Retains Raebareli
In a move that has stirred the political landscape, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has chosen to relinquish his seat in Wayanad, opting instead to retain his familial stronghold of Raebareli, which he triumphed in during the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. The announcement was made by Congress party chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday, bringing a mix of surprise and excitement among party supporters.
Amidst the backdrop of fervent discussions held at Kharge’s residence in New Delhi, the Congress top brass emerged with a strategic decision: Rahul Gandhi, having secured victories in both Wayanad in Kerala and Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh, had to vacate one of the seats as per electoral rules. With the deadline looming since the results were declared on June 4, Rahul chose to honor the legacy of Raebareli, a constituency long nurtured by the Gandhi family.
In a heartfelt statement, Rahul Gandhi expressed his commitment to both Raebareli and Wayanad. “The people of Wayanad can think that they have two members of Parliament, one is my sister and the other is me. My doors are always open for the people of Wayanad, I love every single person in Wayanad,” he assured, emphasizing his continued connection with the southern constituency.
The torch of representation for Wayanad now passes to Priyanka Gandhi, Rahul’s sister and Congress General Secretary, marking her electoral debut. The decision, as Kharge revealed, aims to strengthen the party’s presence and ensure that both constituencies receive dedicated attention. “Priyanka ji will fight from Wayanad,” Kharge announced, echoing the optimism within the party ranks.
Priyanka Gandhi’s entry into the electoral fray has been anticipated with great enthusiasm. Known for her charismatic presence and deep-rooted connection to the Gandhi family’s political legacy, Priyanka’s candidacy is seen as a fresh yet familiar chapter for the Congress party. Addressing the people of Wayanad, she vowed to uphold the trust placed in her. “I will work hard and I will try my best to make everyone happy and be a good representative. I have a very old relationship with Raebareli and Amethi and it cannot be broken. We will both be present in Raebareli and Wayanad,” she affirmed, underscoring her dual commitment to both constituencies.
The news was met with jubilant celebrations in Wayanad, as Congress workers took to the streets, welcoming Priyanka Gandhi with open arms. Her name had long been speculated for various parliamentary seats, but her debut in Wayanad is seen as a strategic and symbolic choice, reinforcing the party’s stronghold in Kerala.
Should Priyanka Gandhi win the Lok Sabha bypolls, it will mark a historic moment with three members of the Gandhi family simultaneously serving in Parliament. This scenario not only highlights the enduring legacy of the Gandhi family in Indian politics but also sets the stage for a dynamic and closely watched political journey for Priyanka Gandhi.
