European Union asks citizens to treat COVID ‘like a flu’: Is this the future of the virus?

-Anushka Singh

On 16th September, the European Union asked citizens to treat COVID like a flu. At least 8 countries have ended mask mandates with Spain being the first. Others such as Switzerland and England are now entering a transition phase. Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation [WHO] has warned countries against the step. And some scientists have suggested that Omicron might not be the last variant of this virus. Previously, there was speculation about a new variant called Deltacron, that originated in Cyprus. So, why can this possibility be considered? According to a recent report, recovery rates of the virus have increased up to 94%. And in countries like China and Israel, more than half of the population has gotten vaccinated. It should also be considered that COVID had a drastic impact on sectors like tourism and real estate. Removing mask mandates will one of the initial attempts to return to a normal life. So, while it may not be immediate, this transition for rest of the world seems inevitable at this point.
