THE US HAS A DRUG-RESISTANT FUNGUS PROBLEM

Candida auris, a drug-resistant fungus discovered in 2016, is increasingly reported in multiple states, especially Georgia and Florida. The CDC calls it an “urgent antimicrobial resistance threat.” It mainly spreads in healthcare settings among immunocompromised patients via medical devices. Symptoms are mild, but it has a high fatality rate. Its resilience complicates control measures in hospitals.
